Even a huge task starts with the first step:
with the category basic orthopaedic instruments (approx. 270 individual instruments) for knee and hip endoprosthetics.
Surgical instruments that intuitively convey their purpose and are designed to be uncompromisingly functional - this is how Aesculap instruments should be.
Gerhard Frey, Marketing Sterile Good Management & Laparoscopy at Aesculap
At the beginning of our collaboration, the Aesculap in-house development team and Wilddesigners met for several workshops to explore the functionality and variety of surgical instruments. Materiality and manufacturing processes were still open at the beginning, although months of preliminary studies showed that it was possible to manufacture them from a single piece of steel.
The form-finding process oscillated back and forth between the teams in Tuttlingen and Gelsenkirchen. Several iterative development loops and large-scale six-monthly user tests with international participants brought stability to the development and ensured ever better ergonomics.
Flowing rounded shapes without edges and heels characterise the formal concept, ensure optimal reprocessing and guarantee that the grip areas adapt ergonomically to the user's hand. Wherever one has to reach, is characterised by a uniform structure and can be grasped intuitively.
The basic orthopaedic instruments are made exclusively of stainless steel, either by the milling process or the so-called hollow handle process, in which volumes are welded together from embossed half shells. The matt surface finish is optimised for reprocessing and ensures that the instruments are largely glare-free in the operating theatre. In terms of sustainability, the new products are top.
The SQ-line instruments mark the launch of a uniform design for the entire portfolio. For this purpose, a comprehensive definition of the recognition and design features was carried out after the implementation into the series. Style guide documents, the so-called Corporate Product Perception (CPP) help the developers to ensure a consistent product appearance.

The basic orthopaedic instruments are made of pure stainless steel. The matt surface finish has been optimised for reprocessing and glare-free surgery, and the symmetrical design of the instruments provides clear orientation for its correct use. Fluently rounded shapes create an ergonomic impression, enabling an optimal fit for the user’s hand. Thanks to elongated surfaces and a uniform structure, the grip areas are clearly recognisable.
Statement by the jury Due to their uncompromising materiality, the basic orthopaedic instruments impress with their outstanding ergonomic and sustainable properties.
And this is just the beginning...

Together with the WILDDESIGN team, Aesculap was able to set more than just innovative impulses by focusing entirely on functionality. In particular, the intuitive ergonomics of the new products are repeatedly highlighted in practice. The design result also impresses with a high level of sustainability that is second to none.
