SPINDIAG RHONDA*: “MINI-LAB” FOR POINT-OF-CARE USE

Point of care (POC) testing has become increasingly important not only to tackle the global health hazard caused by the new SARS-CoV-2, but also to address the challenges multidrug-resistant bacteria are causing for healthcare systems worldwide. Rapid testing solutions right at admission of a patient to a hospital therefore have become critical to prevent or contain spreading of viral and bacterial pathogens. The Freiburg-based start-up Spindiag GmbH is developing the Spindiag Rhonda rapid POC testing system for the detection of bacterial and viral pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2. The system allows high-risk patients to be tested – and quarantined if needed – within approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

The design of the testing system had to meet high usability requirements to enable easy integration into the clinical routine of a hospital. To manage this challenge, Spindiag was supported by WILDDESIGN, which not only developed the product and interface design but also helped to create the company’s brand and corporate design during a fruitful two year collaboration.

As a young, innovative Medtech-Startup we were looking for an industrial designer with experience in the medical field and found what we were searching with WILDDESIGN. Initially only responsible for the industrial design of the processor device, the Spindiag Rhonda player, WILDDESIGN also supported us in developing our corporate identity including all aspects of brand and corporate design. The new corporate identity perfectly expresses our company mission and vision as well as our customer-centric approach. The collaboration with WILDDESIGN developed into a valued and inspiring partnership. The outcome was a testing device that combines the latest standard of industrial design with a user friendly technology enabling a smooth integration into the clinical routine of hospitals.

Product Design

Our first step was to consider optimal integration into the POC setting by also considering the optimal size of the testing device. Through technical optimisations, vertical alignment and a slightly curved housing design, the footprint was reduced and a slim device created.

The aim for usability was to come up with a simple and ergonomic system with a self-explanatory user interface for easy handling. Through discrete ventilation openings and by using design elements from the consumer-product area, we were able to develop the Spindiag Rhonda player as a highly professional testing device with an easy-to-use interface.

User Interface

User Interface

The touch screen is becoming more and more dominant as an interaction concept for technical devices. Nevertheless, we developed the whole range of interface solutions for Spindiag in the form of digital prototypes. This way we were able to weigh up and evaluate all interaction possibilities against eachother.

The preferred interaction concept consists of a status display and three separately positioned touch buttons. The setup of this interface allows for straightforward operation of the device – it is obvious to the user that he will not come into contact with multi-layered menus and settings options. This is a notable difference to the touch screen and a strong advantage in the point-of-care context.

The detailed development of the interface was tested by our customer in close cooperation with external usability experts in numerous usability evaluations.

Corporate Design

The market for smart POC testing devices is developing rapidly. In order to establish Spindiag Rhonda and highlight its unique selling points, we jointly created a progressive brand image.

The design of the logo symbolizes the technology that forms the core of the start-up: laboratory automation through rotation with the aid of centrifugal microfluids. For the design of the player latest digital design trends were used to reflect the smart and digital approach of Spindiag Rhonda. Additionally, we were able to help shaping the basics of Spindiag’s brand image, ranging from cartridge packaging, instruction for use and website design, thereby creating a coherent Spindiag Rhonda brand identity.
